![]() Garden in back of Jean Pesynhof (Robinson's back yard). It was here that around two thirds of the Pilgrim church lived for 11 years in 21 little row houses that extended down this courtyard and beyond the back brick wall which was not there at the time of the Pilgrims. |

![]() View from the other side of the brick wall looking back toward the courtyard (directly behind the tree). The Pilgrims' houses occupied from the immediate foreground to the rear of Pastor John Robinson's house. |

![]() Looking 90 degrees left from the previous picture, this is the University of Leyden building used by the Pilgrims for their worship services for about 2 years prior to their departure to America. The room they used was the gray portion extending into the later brick addition (see floorplan). The building still houses administration offices for the university today. |

![]() During the Pilgrims' stay in Leiden, a young boy named Rembrandt Van Rijn, the eighth of nine children, attended this Latin school about one block from the Pilgrims area. Here he was educated in Mathematics, Greek, classical literature, geography and history. This school is just around the corner from William Brewster's building in which Rembrandt's colleagues and friend Jan Lievens lived, making it probable that Rembrandt crossed paths often with those who would alter become the founders of America. On May 20th, 1620, at the age of 14, Rembrandt enrolled at the University of Leiden (just a few months prior to the Pilgrims' departure), where he studied science and anatomy. After only a few short months he left his studies to pursue painting. By 1621 Rembrandt was an apprentice to Jacob Isaaczs van Swanenburgh who lived nearby on Langbrug (long bridge). Rembrandt painted in his studio very near the vantage point of this photograph until his work was well known and in 1631 he moved to Amsterdam |
